Monument of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (Center of old city center)

This monument was built to honour and commemorate King Ramkhamgaen, the great King of the Sukhothai period, who created the Thai alphabet (Lai Sue Thai). The characteristics of the King Ram hamhaeng statue are that of a fine a tistic sculpture, with proper prpostions of face and body, of an aristocrat during Sukhothai period. The face was also sculptured as a Buddha image of Sukhothai style. The King Ramkhamhaeng statue is in the position of sitting on a throne of 4m long and 2.88m wide. The right hand is holding a scripture and the left is in a lecture position. On the left of the throne is a dagger. It was molded from bronze mixed with copper and smoke-dried, weighting about 3 tons.

King Ramkhamgaen is still very much respected as the king who introduced the style of benevolent monarchy that remains today.
